People paying outrageous prices for designer dogs :(
Krabi Animal Welfare is part of a large global initiative to help stray dogs and find forever homes for them. In the past 2 years we have really struggled to find homes for our dogs partly because of Covid and the near shut down of tourism that was essential to our operations.
It saddens me a bit when I see people looking to get designer dogs for big money when there are so many dogs in kennels and animal-shelters, many of which are these exact same designer dogs that people are paying thousands of dollars for. When people do this they are perpetuating the doggy mills where many times the mother dogs live in horrible situations and even the babies are treated poorly right up until the time they are taken away from the mother, cleaned, and prepared for presentation and sale.
If people could see the other side of this business maybe they could stop their support of it.
I've never really understood the desire to have a specific breed of dog, especially when in my experience the "mutts" that are 90% of the dogs we encounter are just as well behaved, cute, and wonderful.... maybe even more so. Recently someone forwarded me a price list from a breeder and importer of designers dogs in Singapore and these prices are just outrageous.
It saddens me to think that there are people out there that are actually paying this much money for a pet when at the same time there are tens of thousands of dogs that are in no kill shelters like our own, just waiting to be adopted. Not only that but I think about how much good our and many other organizations like ours could do with thousands of dollars.
While these people, who I have intentionally not called out or named are likely making a very good living from the over-priced sale of these pups, we barely have enough money to continue to feed the dogs that we look after.
The $12,800 that one of the Poodles is being sold for could likely fund our feeding operations for an entire year, perhaps even expand it.
Here's an idea. If you have this kind of money to spend on a puppy, I'm sure that dog is going to have a great life but how about before purchasing it go and at least have a look at your local shelter or animal-welfare organization. I see that this organization has a Pug for $4000. We currently have one at our shelter that you can have for free, then you could use that $4000 to do some good in the world.
Not all breeders are horrible, but sadly, more often than not they are something that if you were to see it it would break your heart.
Stop supporting the puppy-mill trade. At any moment in time there are tens or perhaps hundreds of thousands of dogs looking for a loving home somewhere in the world.
