How the sterilization process works

This is not an article about how the medical procedure works - it involves an operation that takes the babymaker stuff out of the animals. I think everyone understands that. However, it isn't as simple as running up on some strays and grabbing them because normally these homeless pups are a bit more stand offish than your usual house-dog. We have to utilize other tactics.

First off, we have to gain the trust of the pack otherwise we risk actually accidentally injuring them while attempting to catch them. We do not tranquilize the dogs in the field because of obvious negative side effects that could occur. We take a more traditional approach: food.

We will normally spot a pack and come by with food for many days until they know who we are. It may not surprise you to find out that the quickest way to a doggos heart is for them to see you as a source of kibbles.

Once we can pick them up and pet them without the pack responding violently, we will cage them, take them away temporarily, and then put them back where we found them after the operation is complete and they have healed.

If the pack does respond negatively, we will put the pups back and give more food, then try again another day. There has not been a single instance where this tactic didn't eventually work.

Perhaps it seems a bit cruel that we put them back after the procedure but two factors are at play here

• These dogs have been living outdoors presumably their entire lives
• We do not have the funds or space to handle this process any other way

After returning them to the wild, we will continue to stop by with food for weeks following the procedure to insure that everyone is healing up correctly. It really is amazing how these lovely creatures will remember you forever based on just a little bit of compassion.
