After weeks in our care "Blackie" released back to his home area
We have been a bit down in the dumps lately because we had 2 car accident victims brought in at around the same time and one of them doesn't seem to be getting any better despite our best efforts. It seems as though that dog will likely be permanently paralyzed. We need to celebrate our victories though because in an unlucky twist of fate another dog with almost exactly the same issue (minus the nerve damage) was brought in on the same day and we were able to return him back where he came.
Blackie got hit by a car and the driver sped off, which is quite common in this country. He had a broken leg and was struggling to get around. Since street dogs still need to seek out food it is a long and complicated road to recovery for them without aid because they are not able to rest long enough for the wound to heal. This is where we come in.
We made certain that he needed to move as little as possible and never wanted for food either. He also received physio of sorts as we encouraged him to learn to walk again. It was a long couple of weeks but a few days ago he started walking normally again. In years past, we likely would have kept him around a bit longer to just be sure, but in these trying times we decided to return him back to his home area before he became too attached to living with us. A tragic danger of looking after these creatures for too long is that they will sometimes "forget" how to live in the semi-wild environment that they live in and will no longer be capable of supplying themselves with food. Thankfully for Blackie, he lives near a temple that we support so getting food shouldn't be too difficult
It was nice to see him almost immediately get greeted by one of his pals from his home and they were wagging their tails and clearly very happy to be reunited. Even though it would be endearing if he had done so, we were actually quite pleased when he didn't try to chase our car when we left, thus indicating that he is content to be back where we originally picked him up. Hopefully this entire experience will encourage him to have better "street smarts" and also, we hope the community will spread the word of our actions so that perhaps they can be a little more aware of these guys when they are driving around.
Overall it was actually quite delightful to have Blackie around for a few weeks while he recovered and if these were normal times his friendliness and stunning beauty would probably result in him being adopted very quickly. For now, we are just extremely happy that he recovered and made it back to his "family."
