A fantastic week for doggy adoptions here in Krabi

in #dogs3 years ago

We have had a dramatic drop off in activity ever since Covid ravaged this country's economy. I realize that Thailand is not special and this is affecting the entire world as well. Our donations of both volunteer time and money has dropped 80% in the past year and we have done the best we can with what little we have left, including dipping into our own pockets frequently from the other jobs that those of us that work here have. Our paid Thai staff have even offered to work for free until we can pay them again which really shows us that they are not just here for a paycheck but also have a true love for the animals of this country as well, which was very heart warming.

So things have been tough for us but we carry on as best we can anyway. In the past week we were able to celebrate a major victory in that we were able to successfully re-home a couple of dogs that have been with us for a while.

We picked these siblings up 3 months ago when they were discovered by a local in said community on the side of the road all alone, whining and apparently waiting for their mother who never came back. We do not know if the mother was hit by a car or poisoned - both of these situations are very likely in Thailand, or if she just abandoned them. The second scenario is rare but also happens every now and then.

The 3 siblings have been in our care when out of the blue someone came by and adopted one of them. Then, when he got home apparently some friends saw how cute and lovely the dog was and the next thing you know another person came by and adopted his sister.

This was just a wonderful week for us because our kennels are at over capacity right now and we have had to suspend picking up any other strays except in the most extreme circumstances because of it. We are overjoyed to have found forever homes for these very lovely puppies.

Unfortunately, this means that we have one of the 3 siblings that wasn't yet selected and as of now, she is showing signs of sadness that her brother and "twin sister" are no longer around. We have a difficult time looking into the minds of dogs, but the sadness is evident even though we shower her with even more love than we used to in an attempt to keep her spirits up.

We are hopeful that the two people who adopted the first two will find a third so that the entire group can have a family to live with rather than being in our kennels which we keep as nice as we can but of course just like any other shelter in the world, it is nowhere near as nice as it would be in a real home.

In the meantime we are celebrating this small victory since it has been absolute ages since we successfully re-homed an animal in our care.

I want to once again encourage anyone reading this to adopt animals rather than buy them. Adopt, don't shop!

Also, please donate your money and time (or both) to your local animal rescue or shelter: They are always in need of this and it makes a world of difference!

I will tell you something else they do for dogs and it could help you, some food companies for these animals hold events, in these they exhibit the dogs and people choose to sponsor them, that is, they buy food for one or more months for the chosen dog, Well, you'll see if the idea works for you.
Greetings

we already do this on our own website but perhaps there is an opportunity for us to branch out a bit. Sponsoring a specific dog complete with pictures and what not would probably be a good idea.
