Lily's Story, a shaggy dog tale - Episode 4 - A friend called Libby (an Original short story)

in #dog8 years ago

Lily is a Yorkshire Terrier x Apricot Poodle. This is a continuation of the story of how she has changed our lives.

It's our turn to go for dinner with Richard and Tracy. It is the home of Lily's other best friend, a golden labrador, Libby. Libby has the best collection of dog toys one could ever possibly imagine. She is also the giver of the most lovely dog toys and happily shares all her toys except stinky slipper, which she guards well by keeping it as a pillow under her chin. Lily is in the most wonderful dog toy frenzy. She sits in the toy basket testing each toy and flinging them out of the basket for a thirty second shake before hopping back into the basket for the next one. Squeak squeak squeak, shake shake shake, it is so funny watching her joy and excitement. After dinner we sit down on the sofas, Tracy is beside me and Lily by now very excited in dog toy heaven, leaps up to take her high spot behind Tracy's shoulder, bleugh, dog vomit streams down Tracy's shoulder. I am so mortified but Tracy is laughing. We decide that the dog toys must be banished to the downstairs loo for future visits with just one squeaky toy being left out for Lily. And of course stinky slip for Libby to rest her chin on.

Libby is coming to stay, we are very excited as we have only ever known Lily, a dog so small! Libby is a real dog type of dog. Proper dog lead, real dog walk, mountainous poo pile sort of dog. She has visited many times of course and has no problem settling in. Her first stop is the hallway for a really great long big dog shake, a little storm of golden hair flies all around her in a sunlit halo. I realise again that there are massive advantages to the yorkiedoodledog. The beanbag is a big hit with Libby and her skinny thin dog bed, the one you can hear her elbows hit the ground through, stays cold in the corner as she lounges with Paul in the beanbag. She takes on a queenly attitude and Lily, normally so in charge and bossy herself, accepts Libby and skips around her slow labradory legs with little terrorist legs. Easy to nick a toy from a big dog and to be honest Libby really couldn't care less, she is good at sharing, except for Stinky Slip safely tucked under her chin. We set off for a real walk up the hill. Libby is a bit older than Lil and she is getting tired as we pass the woodland near our house. Lily and I march to the top of the track while Libby snoops around on the edge of the wood and waits for our return. We arrive home puffing and it is tea time. I turn my back to prepare dog bowls and in a very short space of time Libby has discovered the chaise longue. Well it is a queenly piece of furniture and after our hot walk up the hill I don't have the heart to move Libby off. We take a photo and send it to Richard and Tracy as a postcard of Libby's holiday. There is an almost immediate reply, get her off the chaise, but she looks so comfy we smile and leave her there, there will be no elbows on the floor in our house, after all we are by now used to the every wish and whim of Lily! Libby is easy to please.

As we wave Libby off it seems quiet in our house, but for the foreseeable future we will have the pleasure of finding puffs of fluffy Libby hair appearing from every nook and cranny that we didn't even know were there!
