The main protagonists in novels and video games are interesting and endearing to audiences because of their character flaws despite possessing godlike prowess. D&D toons are different from novel protagonists for many reasons but, I think, most prominent is their potential lack of prowess AND character short comings.

More often than not novel protagonists are alone in their biggest challenges while utilizing every ounce of strength and skill acquired over the story arc. Whereas toons have a party to back them up and make up for their lacking abilities and cover their blind spots.

In novels and games we follow a complete and, eventually, invincible savior or destroyer but in tabletop games like Dungeons & Dragons we each get to play a piece of one.
