Humans are constantly chasing down satisfaction. This grasping is the fundamental cause of all misery. Ok, so I'm getting a bit Buddhist philosophical here but if you think about it, it's true. Why do people do drugs? Because they want to feel good. But of course the high is impermanent, so they get pissed off at the world and go find something else to try to fill that void; and the cycle continues.
The truth of the matter is, yes we are our own worst enemy - but the solution is simple yet simultaneously not so simple. We have to learn to truly be happy where we are now. Break out of the cycle of blind reaction. Sadly this requires quite a lot of introspection which some people are just not ready nor willing to do!
I'm with you - I think personal responsibility is one of the most important things we have. But many people don't even know what personal responsibility is. They see it as the responsibility to get to work on time, or to pay their bills. They don't see it as taking responsibility for their health instead of just moaning that their doctor doesn't have time for them, or trying to use less plastic, instead of moaning about pollution. They don't see themselves as important enough to do any of these things, and in doing so, they give away their personal power. In effect, they are actually giving those people that they see as ruling the world permission to rule over them.
It was around 2011-2012 when I started to learn about libertarianism. When I saw what libertarianism was all about, I stopped considering myself to be a liberal.
One thing libertarians are big on is self responsibility. That was a big reason why I took a liking towards libertarians right on the spot. These days, I can’t go on social media without reading someone talking about what governments should do for them or others.
