I see Brexit as part of an entire cult of otherism that has swept across the world. Conservatism has become a cult of otherism. It’s all just an excuse for the same kind of extremism that swept nations into WWII. Maybe it’s a reaction to the change that globalism is bringing. Maybe it’s driven, at least in part, by climate change driving unrest in far flung countries and economic migration. Maybe it’s old bigotries. Likely, it’s a combination of these and many other complex issues. But, whatever the causes, it’s bringing out the worst and most selfish impulses of which humans are capable in a demographic who call themselves “conservatives.”
In America, we can trace the rise of this cult of otherism back to Nixon’s Southern Strategy and see that Trump is the culmination of that strategy that’s been running in overdrive since the rise of the Tea Party. The Tea Party took over the GOP (republican party) and conservatism in the US. The Tea Party is nothing more than theocratic corporatist Dominionism supplanting our constitutional democratic republic to impose their vision of a theocratic corporate feudal state where we are all expected to turn a blind eye to the atrocities being perpetrated in the name of our government and our Faith, and to just shut up and work until we die.
The whole world seems to be teetering on the edge… To one side is a flaming descent into hate-fueled nightmares; to the other side is an uphill climb to something unknown, but hopefully more inclusive and progressive and positive.
I am afraid you are right @momzillanc this is exactly the kind of ill informed and misguided behavior that led the German nation and the rest of the world into the chaos of WWII.

Leaving the EU is just plain dumb. @rebeccabe The problem with the EU was always the unelected bureaucrats that rode the gravy train and made some very stupid decisions. If we had stayed in the EU we could have changed that structure. Now we are leaving that opportunity has gone.
This is just the beginning of the trade war. It will get very messy and will probably end in violence.
