A few months ago I've decided to follow PewDiePie on a live streaming website called Dlive. That was the first time I heard of it so I had to do some research. I've learned that the site originated here, on Steemit and that it was first based on steem.

When Dlive separated themselves from Steemit a company that was financed by Chinese investors made their own chainblock with a "cryptocurrency" called Lino and that's what they used instead of steem. I understood nothing about how the site works. It seemed odd that they claimed you could earn money (Lino) just by watching live streams on their platform.

Now you might be wondering why I wrote "cryptocurrency" and not a cryptocurrency . Well, that's because they claimed it was one but it actually wasn't. It was a token currency with no actual value outside of their platform that they had full control of. So if they suddenly decided that the site goes offline no one would be able to get their money back. And that's exactly what happened.

At first, the whole community on Dlive was promoting investing in the Lino blockchain by buying LINO and locking it in. That means you cannot withdraw the lino for a few weeks. But at the end, the Lino "blockchain" decided they will stop paying out people who live outside of the United States of America unless you do the payout before a certain date. Note that there was a withdrawal period for those who locked their LINOs so some of us couldn't get the tokens back. Thankfully I made some American friends of Dlive who helped me get my money back by withdrawing it themselves and sending me my money via PayPal.

A lot of Europeans and people from other continents did not have the same options as I did. Giving them only two options.

  1. Convert their Linos into a new currency they created that has a lower value losing a lot of money.

  2. Say goodbye to the money you "invested" in the Lino "blockchain".

In conclusion, both websites used people to give them money and at the end of it, they made it really hard for people to get it back with no actual interest that they were promising. They also claimed that Dlive stands for "decentralized live" but the website had Staff and moderators who clearly ran the site.

PewDiePie just signed a million-dollar deal with Youtube for live streaming on their site and I bet he will never speak of this streaming website ever again.
