Perennial Peanut Hay

Do you use perennial peanut hay for your livestock? If not you may be interested to learn about it. We feed it to our goats, hogs, rabbits and cows with great results. In my area alfalfa hay is not readily available and many people grow Bermuda grass for hay but if you look you can find quality perennial peanut hay. This stuff is gold.

It comes from the Arachis glabrata plant and is nutritionally similar to alfalfa and is not the same as peanut hay, which is very low quality hay. A big plus to perennial peanut hay is after the plant is established in a pasture it does not require pesticides or fertilizer and can maintain its self for 20+ years. This hay is great for all livestock at 15 - 20% protein.

Perennial peanut hay grows well in sandy soils and across most the southern Gulf states. It has deep roots making it adapted for dry areas since it can reach deep down in the soil to pull moisture and nutrients that many other hay varieties cannot and can average between 2 and 3 thousand pounds of production per acre.

I included a short video of one of our hogs eating his hay since maybe people that have never used perennial peanut hay don't believe hogs like eating hay or that it has not nutritional value for them but they do love eating the right type of hay and it is also very good for them. One of the biggest advantage of feeding hay to hogs is it slows down their digestion giving them more time to absorb the fresh green fodder crops or the grain that they are also fed which makes sure you are getting your moneys worth from the high dollar feed and converting it into weight gain on the hog.
