Hi Guys!

Dlive Vocal Lesson: Pentatonic Scale and Warming Up

I thought it was the right rime to post another vocal lesson on this 1st of May!
I love the pentatonic scale because it's easy to learn, and you can sound real badass very quickly if you learn its basic form and sound.

The official definition is :
A pentatonic scale is a musical scale with five notes per octave, in contrast to the more familiar heptatonic scale that has seven notes per octave (such as the major scale and minor scale).
'Penta' means five and 'tonic' means note, so 'Minor Pentatonic Scale' really just means 'Minor Five-Note Scale'. The reason we learn scales is that they are groups of notes that sound really good together that we can use to make up solos (as in lead guitar) and melodies.

It is a scale very often used in modern music, but you will find it pretty much everywhere from Blues to Jazz to Rock to Metal to EDM.

When a singer does what we call a "riff", which is that viby vocal prowess in the like of Lauryn Hill or Stevie Wonder, it's always on the pentatonic scale, because it sound just so good to bend those notes together.

I will explore in this lesson the different forms of the pentatonic scale , whether it's major or minor, but we will discover that playing a major pentatonic on a minor chord is harmonically possible, and vice-versa.
Confusing? Yes, it is a little, but at the same time, what you just have to remember, is that this group of 5 notes, will become your best friend , and get you out of some real messy situations.

Very commonly you will see a musician using the pentatonic scale as a security cushion, especially after messing up few notes on a solo.
Because it has that reassuring sound to it, and because you cannot fail when soloing on it.

Pentatonic we love you!

If you need to visualize the patterns of the scales, here they are, from a website called Guitarworld.

If you don't care about patterns visualization, I totally get it and just close your eyes and try to repeat the different forms sung in the video.
