Real Madrid faces prison 5 years

Croatia's prosecutor-general Luka Modric has been charged with false testimony during the trial of Zandravko Mamic, former president of Dynamo Zagreb, accused of embezzlement and tax fraud, local press reports said.

Real Madrid face a penalty of six to five years' imprisonment under Croatian law, if found guilty.

According to the Croatian newspaper Visserangi List, there are contradictions between Modrich's statements last summer and his 2015 testimony when he asked for his transfer from Dynamo to Tottenham Hotspur in 2008.

Modric had testified on June 13 in the trial of Mamic, 58, the man in Croatian football who is accused of many abuses.

Mamic was charged with misappropriating funds estimated at 15.6 million euros, specifically during forged transfers, evading paying taxes of 1.6 million euros.

Modric's comments differed between his statements in court and his statements during an investigation dating back to 2015, which means that his statements could constitute "a crime of false testimony," according to the Croatian court.

According to the Croatian press, Modric admitted during his testimony that he had paid cash in the amount of 7 million euros to the Mamic family out of the 9 million who entered his account during this transition.

Modric left Dinamo Zagreb in 2008 and moved to Tottenham, and from there to Real Madrid in 2012
