My thought is that it will be in the best interest of most smart contract developers to invest in reputable 3rd party audit firms to review and stress test the code before deploying. Bounties have also been a great way to engage the community as part of the development of code. These factor also help create a supporting community that will be present post deployment.

Great analogy. I've always wondered why such slow development has been taking place as far as smart contracts are concerned. As you say, I do believe in it's long term future, but also makes me wary in certain projects that have/are releasing too early.
One of the issues with crypto in general, is how most projects are overly keen to pander to investors demands for fast development and release of new features before validating the security of existing ones.
Whether Cardano will be the success many hope/expect, I can't say, but they have the right mindset when it comes to getting it right and not being pushed in releasing too soon.
