FEAR comes from a brief window in game engine tech history when stencil shadows and per-pixel lighting was brand new, so all games had to use it. FEAR, Doom 3, Chronicles of Riddick: Butcher Bay, etc.

It's a really stark, grim, distinctive look that suits games of a particular genre very well. It's sort of a shame how short lived that graphical trend was.
