This is a great article on human psychology. the Tl;Dr version would be about keepin people enganged even if itis a meaningless task. Having to walk 6 minutes and wait for 1 minute is vastly preferred over walking 1 minute and waiting for 6 minutes. It's a great bit of psychology to learn when it comes to offering a service whether it is a physical service or a digital one.

lol... I wonder why in Marxist countries, where people wait in line for everything, they did not realize this. Neo-Marxists are more interested in psychology, maybe someday, if they learn something, in their next failures people will not complain about waiting in line for bread.

It is a matter of perception, if people are doing nothing they feel that they are wasting their time, and that bothers them. There are even many people who can't be quiet for a moment and relax, because they feel they could do something better. It's like @gabbynhice says, self-control.

Another thing to to notice is that when people have nothing important in life whether it is material or spiritual, they lean on to basic drivel and as Peter Theiel says it:

“In the most dysfunctional organizations, signaling that work is being done becomes a better strategy for career advancement than actually doing work (if this describes your company, you should quit now).”
― Peter Thiel, Zero to One: Notes on Startups, or How to Build the Future

I saw a horror movie review from a well established popular reviewer who said that the creepiest thing about the movie was the age difference (20+ years) of the protagonist and a consenting adult. When people have nothing to say, they'd rather focus on easy non-issues or minor issues. When waiting in line become too much of a issue for their little minds, they will focus on etiquette of waiting in line. When production become too much to deal with, inequality and redistribution becomes the issue of the day.

self control. Many people dont have it. They are unpatiente and keep running. If you have the abbility to stay calm and wait it means you are not stressfull so your body and mind working well.
Maybe i am old fashioned or my parents done a well job when they teach me. Nowdays some people even dont let the old or the pregnant or a woman with a young child to go first in the line. Thank God i am not like them.😉

Calmness is a superpower and your parents have done a good job raising you :-)

Waiting in line is mostly annoying if you don't know what to do with your waiting time. Why don't use the waiting time to respond to any messages, Email or other communication that needs attention. If you do that than the time in line will run faster and you where also able to use it productive.

Multitasking/Task switching is the best way I know to get rid of the feeling of waiting. So half the time the "waiting" end up being a good thing for me. Sometimes  "waiting" can be therapeutic by allowing you to empty your mind.

that's a great point. i think there must be something very deep in human nature that naturally makes us hate waiting lol.. i always try to keep my mind active while i'm waiting so i feel like i'm not "wasting time"
