This article is a good basic introduction to Steem:

• steemit, the most used application built on the Steem blockchain, is a blogging social media platform, with some similarities to Medium and Reddit.
• since the article was written, many other applications have been built on the Steem blockchain including: steempress, which publishes wordpress blog posts to the steem blockchain; dlike.io - a link sharing application, used to create this post; games like SteemMonsters and Drug Wars (currently number 2 on State of the Dapps); actifit, linked to fitbit, which records and rewards your daily steps and partiko, a mobile phone version of steemit.
• there are numerous ways to earn rewards by participating in the Steem network; at present, it won't make you lots of money. However, you will learn about the blockchain, find out about new ways to monetise your time spent on social media, meet interesting people and have fun.

There's lots of opportunities for creatives with networks for artists, musicians, filmmakers and writers; charities are already benefitting from the Steem blockchain in a variety of ways and social impact is being created through initiatives like cleanplanet and treeplanter; some small businesses are already here, mainly seen through the applications, and the creation of tokens which can be traded will allow small businesses and charities to reward customers and supporters.

The blockchain has bigger potential for local and central government to distribute funds and create and reward social impact - there are already projects experimenting and testing this including the European Commission.
