IBM chief economist Martin Fleming doesn't think about robots replacing us at work. Research article from MIT and IBM Watson AI lab shows that for most of us, automation is not likely to mean physical robots replacing humans. Not all of us will lose our jobs, but our jobs will change due to artificial intelligence and machine learning.

Technology has long been changing the nature of work and the skills needed for the most desirable jobs. But until recently, robotics has meant automating repetitive or arduous tasks, while often leading to new tasks for workers.

The emergence of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) represents a new kind of opportunity - and challenge - for work and for workers. The work we can do with machine learning is much wider in scope than previous technologies have allowed. The expanded scope of work is changing the value of employers in the tasks and types of skills most in demand.

However, as AI and machine learning are changing businesses and transforming the industry, the innovators of these technologies must consider not only business implications but also social impact.
