Basic Footwork - wing chun techniques

We talk about how to punch, kick and make different strikes. To execute this strike, you have to move forward, backward and to the side. Here comes the footwork.
If you are not good at footwork, you cannot make these strikes work for you. If you are slow when you move forward, your opponent already moves from there before you hit him. If you cannot hit, what's the point of striking?
There are little difference in footwork in different martial arts. The basic is the same. If you are good at footwork, you will find it very useful in combat. You can apply the same footwork when you have a weapon. It is not that you do something different. You move the same way, but only difference is you have a weapon now.
Controlling distance is one of the crucial factors in a fight. Again your footwork helps a lot to control the distance. You can move forward or step back fast in order to control the distance. If you do not feel comfortable with someone, do not let that person come close to you.
