A principios de los años 60, dos amigos de la escuela secundaria en Londres, Tim Staffell y Brian May, formaron una banda de rock de cinco componentes llamada 1984. A pesar del orwelliano nombre de la banda, Staffell dice que en realidad fue una "banda de versiones muy divertida" que consiguió dar conciertos de forma regular por Londres. Tras acabar la educación básica, la banda se separó, pero Staffell y May se mantuvieron unidos, y finalmente encontraron a un baterista llamado Roger Taylor para formar un nuevo grupo llamado Smile.
