Upper back pain: 9 causes

Unlike lower back pain (LBP), upper back pain not quite common problem, not at least in clinic practice. While LBP is quite common and in most of the instances, simple musculoskeletal pains are the main cause, upper back pain may be due to some serious underlying illness. So upper back pain should not be ignored. The upper back usually means the area against the 12 thoracic vertebrae.
Here is the list of important causes of upper back pain:
- Awkward posture during the sleep
- Deconditioning of the upper back muscles (e.g due to not doing any kind of physical activities or exercise)
- Overuse of the muscle in a repetitive fashion (e.g. a baseball pitcher)
- Any kind of injury/accident
- Disc herniation and compression on the nerve
- Osteoarthritis on the bones and joints
- Pain due to muscle or other soft tissue
- Infections
- Lung cancers
