Maybe His Best One - the Great Dictator
We all know this guy from his slapstick movie times. This guy who fought against establishment - and later on in his career - against government. This guy who emigrated from his home country USA to Switzerland (he was forced to do so). This guy who took a bit of time to switch from silent to voice enabled movies.
One of his best voice movies - and maybe the most well known one - is the one I share here 'the Great Dictator'. He showed guts when deciding to make this, knowing the timing of this one was around the start of the last world war, we all know about.
It is for a reason I share this movie: Tonight I'll be watching this one, again! :)
Another movie I can recommend is the lesser know 'Monsieur Verdoux'. One Charles Chaplin made years later, in 1947.

I don't think I have ever actually seen any of Charlie Chaplins movies but you are right, it did take a lot of guts to do that movie around that time. A Brave soul.

I can only recommend to watch some of his movies done in the 40s and 50s. I think you can find several of them in the usual online channels.
"Monsieur Verdu". The second is a fully sound film by Charles. He really is not like all his other films, I mean, that Chaplin is already feeling tired, because how many pictures he created. But this film is not lost much. He is also dramatic, funny, interesting. Only the drama has become more, the humor has become a bit “blacker”, the music has become sadder, but the “interestingness” has remained the same. After all, it is Chaplin, and he can not make a bad movie.
