This article is from 2012 so it's certainly possible that same hack would not work today. The more recent hacks I've heard about had to do with people using SMS as their 2 factor method rather than an app like Authy or Google Authenticator. I personally use Authy because the 2FA keys are encrypted and backed up. Google Auth doesn't allow for backups which is more secure but a huge pain if you lose your 2FA device.

Authy is actually the best authentication app I've found. Google's version is bit of a minimalistic product. Things have changed over the times. But not a huge lot at the lower levels. You can read this post by @arthuradamson which happened last year.
