Neuroscience and the 'Sanskrit Effect'

Although the Indians from ancient time have known that the chanting of mantras in Sanskrit improves the brain in unimaginable ways, only now Science is beginning to explore the same.

Thanks for the reference to the article. I lived in a bhakti yoga ashrama for 10 years as a monk in my twenties about thirty years ago. We rose every morning at 4am to chant Sanskrit bhajans and then did two hours of japa meditation reciting our mantra. We also learned to memorise Bhagavad Gita slokas (verses) some of which I still have in my permanent memory today. We also recited texts from the Bhagavat Purana every morning in class, one verse a day. With all that recitation and memorization, people still compliment me on my memory.
It seems to work. I am an example of this theory.
Also we only slept 6-7 hours a day every day all year long.
Hi @julianhorack, thanks for the note. Since you were in a bhakti yoga ashram, my guess is that you were in one of the Ramakrishna ashram? Do I have it right?
I am aware of the routine in the ashrams, most of them are as strict as you have described. So far, I have stayed in four ashrams on numerous (lost count) short visits ranging from 3days to 3 weeks. They are: Ramana Ashram in Thiruvannamalai, Amma's ashram in Kerala, Vanamali Gita Yogashram in Rishikesh and Maitreya Ishwara's ashram in New Zealand (now closed, I believe). In most of these ashrams visitors are not required to abide by the same strictness as the monks.
Personally I know of people who have photographic memory. They can read a book once and read back the whole book to you without making reference to the book again. Usually they are put to a rigorous routine from as young as 3 years of age, memorizing Sanskrit slokas and also learning a musical instrument, usually the violin. It is such a blessing when you have such memory, because learning anything becomes much easier after that.
Blessings and may you have abundance, joy and peace. Happy New Year.
Many thanks @devann. I enjoy hearing about your experiences in the ashrams. That would make valuable subject matter for articles and posts here.
I was in the ashram of Swami Bhaktivedanta, receiving initiation from one of his students.
Yes the traditional Vedic culture trained students to be able to memorize and recite mantras perfectly. even the intonation needed to accurate. Before the use of written word all Vedic texts were only in spoken form and transmitted by aural reception from teacher to student. So memorization was central, and photographic memories were called "srutidhara". What a blessing that would be.
I've always thought that memorising things is useless at best. This scientific research has proven the just the opposite
In asia is the way to learn since millennia
Hi @beco132, you are correct in saying that to simply memorize without understanding a subject could be useless. But then if you are intelligent and curious and have photographic memory, imagine what you can achieve. It becomes such a blessing, because you can learn new things very fast. This is because usually knowledge is cumulative, in that, what you have learnt before becomes the foundation that helps you to learn something else.
Thanks for the comment, @beco132. Happy New Year. May you have abundance, joy and peace.
