'Monster Party' Review | Hollywood Reporter
Today's movie is Monster Party (2018). This wasn't exactly what I expected. I guess I was more prepared for vampires, but the monsters in this are in human form, even if grotesque. It's a film about class, where killers are rewarded with riches.
This is apparent early on with a strip club owner who is going to kill one of the main character's father if gambling debts are not repaid. It is easier to see him as a villain due to exploitive nature of his business. Yet he has power, money and all the women he wants. Transfer this same power and money to a family in a lavish mansion and we aren't always so quick to judge them. We aren't even told what they do for a living.
This is a film that treats the rich as killers. Does killing make you rich or does being rich make you a killer? Is killing the only way to become rich and powerful?
I thoroughly enjoyed this film. For many years I thought I no longer cared for horror films. Lately there have been some good ones. They say that in turbulent times horror movies become more popular. Maybe they become better.
From the article:
Julian McMahon and Robin Tunney star in 'Monster Party,' Chris von Hoffmann's darkly funny horror film about a trio of thieves who get more than they bargained for when they attempt to rob an upscale dinner party.
