DJI has recently unveiled the Osmo Mobile 6 (OM 6), its sixth-generation smartphone gimbal. This latest version builds upon its predecessors, offering improved ergonomics, a new Quick Launch feature, and more.

💕Design and Handling

A standard combo comes with a gimbal, a magnetic clamp, a tripod, a power cable, and a storage pouch.

While the general shape of the DJI OM 6 is similar to its predecessor, it also changes somewhat. Like the DJI OM 5, the OM 6 features a built-in extension rod for capturing selfies and videos at a distance.

There is a locking function at the top lateral axis, and when locked and put into a bag, it won’t be easily damaged.

Compared with OM 5, OM 6 has three main changes in design.
① Lengthened the length of the handle
② Optimized button layout
③ Newly-added status panel

The increased length of the grip makes users feel more comfortable.

As for the button layout, some changes have been made.

The M-button has been relocated to the front.

The joystick has been transformed into one similar to that on the DJI RS stabilization.

There’s also a new side wheel that can control zoom or focus with the twist of the dial. Pressing in on the side wheel will switch between controlling zoom and focus.

A new built-in status panel allows users quickly check the battery level of the OM 6 and displays which of the four built-in shooting modes is activated. Tapping the Mode (M) button will cycle through Follow, Tilt Lock, FPV, and SpinShot. Below is summarized by DJI.

✔Follow: In Follow mode, the camera view follows the gimbal’s pan and tilt movements and stays level during rolls. This mode is suitable for shooting up, down, and diagonally.

✔Tilt Lock: The camera view only follows the gimbal’s pan movement and stays stable during tilts and rolls — ideal for shooting horizontally or moving around a subject.✔FPV: In FPV mode, all three axes of the gimbal follow the movement of the handle. This is wonderful for dynamic filming of still subjects like landmarks, buildings, or statues.

✔SpinShot: Push the joystick to the left or right to control the rotation of the camera view and create dynamic footage. It’s perfect for shooting push, pull, and high-angle shots.

It should be noted that the battery level isn’t so intuitive to judge since it shows full state all the time, and users can only judge that through the change between green, yellow and red colors.

💕Real-world Experience

001 Quick Launch feature

The biggest highlight of the OM6 is the new quick launch function. When deployed, the OM 6's status panel will automatically turn on, with the status light being red, and the arm is in standby mode.

Once unfolded, attaching a smartphone to the stabilizer automatically triggers DJI’s Mimo app alert to enter the camera view instantly, fastening the preparation process.

640 (4).gif

After shooting, and taking off the magnetic clamp, you can directly flex the arm, and then the stabilizer automatically turns off.

DJI claims this mode is up to three times faster than manually setting everything up, largely improving the shooting experience.

002 New Look

The DJI Pocket 2 is the first that adopts the 'sunset white’ look and then OM 5 inherits that style. Indeed, the color is very popular among many female users. However, it is easy to get dirty in long-term use, therefore the OM 6 is covered with darker gray housing which is more dirt-resistant.

003 Integrated button

The M button, recording button, switch button, and the side wheel is all highly integrated. Take the "switch button" for example, one click is to switch between front and rear camera, double click to switch between horizontal and vertical shooting, and three clicks to switch between video and photo modes.

Novices can learn how to operate from DJI’s official tutorials.

004 Built-in extension rod

Like its sibling—OM 5, the OM 6 features a built-in extension rod for obtaining better-framed selfies or trying out shots from more interesting angles such as those low to the ground as DJI said.

005 Shooting guidance

The Mimo app includes several shooting modes such as Timelapse, DynamicZoom, Gesture Control, Panorama, Story Mode, and more.

640 (7).gif

Besides, the App also offers detailed guidance for different shooting scenes including city, home, park, store, food, and festival situation.

If not enough, you can download the LightCut app, officially recommended by DJI, which is used to guide users along their edition journey and features AI-powered one-tap editing and a range of custom video templates. From shooting to processing, it's a friendly one-stop solution for new creators and pros alike to get the most from their shots.

💕Verdict

The DJI OM 6 not only inherits the advantages of its predecessor: a magnetic quick-release structure, built-in extension rod, and is easily foldable to fit in your palm, but also launches automatically once unfolded to capture shots at a moment’s notice.

In addition, with the help of the Mimo and LightCut app, DJI has helped its users to unlock the full potential of their smartphone photos. DJI Osmo Mobile 6 is available for the retail price of USD 159 from store.dji.com.
