Crafty Fridays - DIY Bath Bomb Recipe #1

Crafty Fridays are making a return,t his time with a bath bomb recipe. I actually have quite a few of these and they're all good, so I'll just post them all over time since I love making bath bombs anyway :)

part 1.png

You'll need the following;

  • 1/2 cup baking soda
  • 1/4 cup citric acid
  • 1/4 cup cornstarch
  • 1/4 cup Epsom salt
  • 3 tablespoons coconut oil
  • 1 teaspoon skin-safe essential oil
  • Lavender, rose petals, or whatever other skin-safe herbs you want

So a few notes - you want baking soda, not baking powder. Don't confuse them. Citric acid is easy to get at most pharmacies, just ask where it is. Any skin-safe salt will do such as sea salt or pink salt, but Epsom salts are meant for baths and such so I like to use them for bath bombs.

I used coconut oil, but any skin-safe oil will work. Baby oil, jojoba oil, all that jazz. And the oil I used here is Dwarven Ale from Black Phoenix Alchemy Labs which is a skin safe oil. I had a little bit left and it smells great, so I wanted to use it. If you're using regular essential oils please do your research and make sure they're skin safe before adding them in and only add a little bit.

I also added lavender and rose petals just because I wanted to. You can leave the herbs out entirely or use different ones, but again make sure they're skin safe once added to hot water. Generally speaking if you can drink it as tea safely you can add it to a bath but better safe than sorry and do your research!

Mix all your dry ingredients in one bowl and your oils in another.

part 3.png

A little at a time, about 2 teaspoons or so, add the oils to the dry ingredients. Don't add them all at once or else you'll fizzle out your citric acid because that's what makes bath bombs fizz like they do.

Part 4.png

When you're done the mixture should feel like slightly damp sand and just about as malleable. So go ahead and pack it into your molds, which should be the flexible silicone kind. I did pumpkins because spooky October and all :D

Once they're packed in nice and tight put the mold in the freezer overnight.

part 5.png

Pop them out of the molds and put them on a flat surface like a plate to finish drying for the next 2-3 days. Then put one in your bath and enjoy!

I really like these. The details of the pumpkin faces came out a little funny but ah well, I wasn't expecting them to be perfect you know? They're good enough for my own home use, and that's what matters here :D
