DIY Compostable Newspaper "Garbage Bag" - Step-by-Step Tutorial with Photos
Tutorial
Here’s a fun little way to begin composting… creating your own “garbage bag” out of newspaper! It’s super simple and biodegradable! I’ve decided to begin using this technique for my bedroom garbage bin instead of reusing plastic grocery/shopping bags. I want to eliminate the need for plastic bags altogether by swapping them out for canvas bags. This means that I must break my habit of using them around the house as well.
Steps
- Lay a large piece of newspaper flat. Use two (one directly on top of the other) if you desire a thicker, sturdier bag.
 - Fold the newspaper in half from corner to corner in order to create a triangle.

 - Fold the bottom right hand corner in to the opposite side at the approx. half way point.

 - Fold the bottom left hand corner in to the opposite side (on top of the previous fold).

 - At this point, you should have the following shape.

 - The top part consists of two triangular sheets. Fold one down on the front side.

 - Flip the bag over and fold the second one down on the other side.

 - That’s it! Gently open up the top by pulling apart the two sides and place it in your garbage bin!

Pros vs. Cons
Since this bag is very little, it requires much more frequent disposal but this means that your garbage doesn’t have the time to get stinky. It is also only useful for small garbage bins such as in the bedroom or bathroom. Super heavy and/or wet items are not a good idea but it is perfect for biodegradable items like kleenex and tissues. When it’s full, simply toss the entire thing into your compost! As I research and practice how to eliminate the amount of garbage I send to the landfill, I will be using this newspaper bag in my bedroom. Kitchen waste is a big trickier so for now I will be utilizing compostable garbage bags.
