Extremely Versatile, Beautiful, Cheap, and Easy Portable Solar Light Holders

in #diy7 years ago (edited)

So, here I am again using the scraps of wood from our fence posts. When we cut off the tops, there were different sizes but all somewhat small. At my husbands chagrin, I wanted to keep them. For a long time they were used as an outside building block set for my son. But, after having made the fence lighting, I thought it would be nice to have some holders that could be set on tables or the ground anywhere we wanted them. I looked on Pinterest, and found some tall holders that gave me the idea.

That’s when this idea was born. Using the old scraps of 4x4 pressure treated fence posts was perfect! It did not matter that they were not the same size. As a matter of fact, it was even better! That way I could group them as nice trios in differing sizes. One thing that I wanted to be sure of was that they did not rot out when we drilled holes in the tops. Therefore I decided it would be a good idea to drill a small hole from the sides of them up to the bottom of the drilled holes. This way, when it rained, no water would sit in them to rot them out.

Here is what you need:

  • 4x4 Pressure Treated lumber
  • Saw to cut them to the desired height
  • Drill
  • 1” drill bit
  • 11/64” drill bit (or similar)
  • Pencil
  • C Clamps (optional for holding in place)

Mark the top end of the post from corner to corner in an “x” so that you can find the center and drill down 3” with the 1” drill bit.

Then, on one side, mark down the depth of the hole in the center where the bottom of the hole should be. Then make another mark about 1.5” below the mark and drill a 11/64” hole at an angle up to the bottom of the 1” hole inside for the water to drain out when it rains.

After that, you’re done! Just drop a solar light in the top and place them wherever you want them. They also make great gifts. Make a set for a house warming gift. Put them along your walkway, in the garden, etc. They are very versitle!
