Piaggio Vespa: Maintenance and repair.
Mechanical work is something that I have always liked to do, since I was little with my father and my aunts who put their hands on the motors of their cars on weekends, that's why I now do the same with my 150cc Vespa NV.
Today I bring some maintenance tips and other help to all those who have or have plans to have one of these scooters that refuse to go out of style.
Keep in mind that a well-oiled machine with good preventive maintenance is a delight when walking and avoids many headaches, the most common problems in these scooters are easy to repair (crosspiece of changes, spark plugs defective or dirty by a bad gasoline / oil mixture, bad carburation due to badly graduated carburetor or gears that do not enter as they should because the selector wires are very fair or loose).
Replacement of crosspiece of changes: The crosspiece of changes is a metal piece of about 2.5 inches that as its name indicates it has a cross shape, this is responsible for engaging the discs of the gears, the manufacture of a softer material than these for avoid wear (it is easier and cheaper to change the crosshead than the entire gearbox, well thought Enrico Piaggio).
To change this piece, do not lower the engine as most manuals say, you only have to drain the engine oil by removing the screw cap on the base of the same, remove the 4 nuts from the piston head, remove the protector of the magneto and the magnet, the plate with the coils and the change selector all in that order.
remove all the nuts that join the 2 halves of the crankcase and we will have the crankshaft and the primary shaft on the top right and the gearbox on the lower left, remove the clip and shaft washer changes and remove the four discs of the speeds taking care to mark its orientation for its mounting, unscrew the bolt of the pin of the speeds (careful porq is screwed against thread, ie loosen to the right), we will have the free cross and we can assemble the new piece, here on is to do the whole process in reverse and. VOILA!
It is important before closing the engine to put new joints, this will prevent oil leaks.
Carburation: There are two points to consider.
1. The proportion of oil for 2-stroke engines is 1/20, that is crucial to prevent the spark plugs from burning or having unburned oil residues, as this will not allow the motorcycle to have a decent spark and the performance will be poor .
2. The simplest way to adjust the carburetor is your Vespa is to tighten the screw of the air mixture and then loosen it 2 turns, that configuration works in most cases.
If the Vespa has not been around for a few years and they want to start a restoration project, remember to throw away the old gasoline and clean the gas tank and the carburetor very well to prevent them from getting clogged with dirt.
If you have any doubts but are stubborn and want to do the work yourself (like me), I leave the link of the Book of the Vespa, this is the manual of cutting and repair of these beautiful scooters.
