Built the first of the shelving units in the livingroom today.
This one is for the crates and kids stuff mostly.
Another project that I am finally getting around to doing and it is trurning out pretty well so far. I got 2x12s and 1/2" plywood at Home Depot yesterday and set about routering the channels in the vertical suports for the smaller of the units. It took about an hour to get all 28 cut 1/2" deep by 1/2" wide. I use the straight edge clamped to the wood as a guide to ensure I am staying on track for each cut. They all came out fairly good and I was able to pretty well match the channels on the center support.
The center support has 1/2" deep channels on either side which still leaves 1/2" of solid wood in the middle to keep the support strong enough. The plywood fits a tiny bit loose in each channel but they hold well when glued.
At the top I installed a 2x2 board such that it is attached securely to each vertical support and then it has 3 long screws that hold it to the wall. On the bottom I have a few pieces of wood that are screwed to the wall to keep the legs in as well.
All in all this came out pretty well and only cost about $42 in materials. Wood is pricey right now with all the fires and people having to rebuild their destroyed homes. I have the shelves cut for the othe rshelving unit but will be routing the supports tomorrow. The worst part of the whole thing is going ot be moving hte book shelf that currently sits where the new shelves will be getting installed. At least I have a shit ton of crates at hand to fill with all the various books.
