Celebrating Opinion Diversity

in #diversity7 years ago

We are frequently reminded from a variety of sources to celebrate diversity. I'm not sure, but I think the focus is on physical diversity, because opinion diversity seems to be less welcome. As my life unfolds I am beginning to see that it is this opinion diversity that the human species owes its longevity. If we all had the same opinion, think of the devastation from just one wrong direction. If we did all think the same way, whose way should we think like: Donald Trump, Hillary Clinton, George Bush, Michael Moore, Winston Churchill, Charles Manson. Who gets the honor of the single colossal opinion that we should all follow from this time forward.

Hopefully, it's obvious why opinion diversity is an integral part of the human experience and without it we could never have survived this long. Then, how best to manage it? How can you hear and consider every opinion and gain consensus for a specific opinion over the rest? I don't think from a socialist, dictatorship, monarchy, or fascist government because they are all single opinion in nature. Democracy and majority rule seems to be the most open form and forum of government as it invites even extreme opinions that wish its demise, whereas the others are historically much less tolerant to opinion diversity.

I celebrate diversity every time I hear someone who has an opinion different than mine and I don’t think of that person as ignorant or stupid. Perhaps celebration of opinion diversity is at least as important as celebrating physical diversity. Physical diversity is usually only skin deep. Is it possible that failing to celebrate opinion diversity with the same fervor as physical diversity could be considered intellectually shallow?
