Is the Disney+ content identical in all countries?

in #disney3 years ago

This might be a question that you don't really care about, but if you have a Disney+ subscription, and also have a Netflix subscription, then you might have an actual interest in finding an answer to this question. How come? What is the background for even asking the question?

For a long time, the question didn't even cross my mind. I thought I needed a separate Netflix subscription in the USA to watch US Netflix, and I thought I needed a Canadian Netflix account to watch content on Canadian Netflix. But, then I discovered that one subscription is enough, and you will always see the Netflix content of the country you are in. So, if you are able to change your country using a VPN, or as you travel, then you will see different content, depending on the country you are in.

But, what's the reality when it comes to Disney+?

Netflix has different content in different countries. For example, the only country in which you can watch the Academy Awarded movie Parasite is in Japan. If you want to watch the movie Aquaman on Netflix, then you will have to be in either Canadian, the Netherlands, or in Spain. And if you want to watch Suits season 9 on Netflix, then you better be located in Canada or in the UK.

But, what about Disney+? Will the content differ if you watch it in the USA, in Germany, in Australia, and/or in the United Kingdom?

I have done some small tests of this, and I have noticed that there are small differences, even though the majority of content is similar. Disney content is mostly licensed to Disney everywhere, and as a result, you will find almost all the Disney traditional movies and other original productions everywhere. All Disney+ original productions are, of course, available on Disney+ worldwide.

There are some series for which Disney has sold the broadcasting rights to other companies, and in such cases, they cannot add it to their own streaming service in that given country or region. This might deal with children's series and/or some movies, but in general, the content is international and available everywhere.

Is there a way to watch Disney+ content in other countries?

If you want to watch Disney+ content in other countries, my suggestion is that you use the VPN services of ExpressVPN. This is a VPN with servers in 95 different countries. You can use this service to connect to VPN servers in most of the countries in which Disney+ is available, and as you connect to a server in Austria, you will see the actual content of Disney+ in Austria. You might see a warning telling you that the ratings might be different compared to the ratings you see in your home country. But, besides that, everything should be the same, with the exception of some titles that might be removed, and other titles that might be available here that you normally will not be able to find in your home country.
