Should Steemit Be an Echo Chamber?

in #discussion7 years ago

Steemit is a social media platform that you are paid to post. It is a decentralized platform that means no central authority governing on what to post or comment. It is supposed to be a place where censoring is zero. That was the selling point. The most amazing thing is there were no adverts. Sweet.

Many of us could not wait long enough to get signed up. We signed up and truly we got paid to blog. That was the best thing to happen to me, only comes second to the invention of sliced bread, and jollof rice! I was overhyped and overjoyed plus other overs too numerous to be mentioned in this short article.

Then I started noticing something, almost everybody agrees with everybody. Discussions as I know it seems a little bit weird. You will see a post about How I Murdered My Landlord, below it, you will see something like.

Good post. Nice article.

Wow. I upvoted.

I resteemed and upvoted.

I like this post.

It would be hard to see someone ask why would you murder the landlord instead of paying him the rent you owed him.

It is only in the rarest of circumstances do you see someone with a different view to that of the author. That takes me to my next article.

How Do You Handle People of Different Opinions?

Do you fly into a blind rage, downvote the opposing view, ignore, or try to engage rationally with the view?

There is this tweet on Oct 14 from @lukestokes

Really smart, rational people disagree on big, important ideas. It happens. The trick is understanding and respecting each other anyway.

I believe smart people are not something hard to find on steemit. I like hearing opinions that are different than mine from time to time. Seeing everyone agree on things is almost like hearing myself speak in an empty large room.

This is not suggesting the need to oppose every view seen on steemit. But there may be a very good explanation for this seeming echo of thoughts, opinions, outlook, ideas etc. People may only contribute to the article they agree on. That is fair enough and logical.

It is the only thing I could come up with that logically explains this phenomenon that kept occurring on a daily basis here.

I know the issue of upvote may be another huge cause of this echo. No one wants to piss off the author so he or she could still upvote them.

I know conversation in other social media tend to be more balanced than I have experienced so far here. I am merely writing from my personal experiences and this is no way a representation of the actual state of other people's experiences.

As usual, I would like to hear your opinion. Feel free to say what is in your mind. I do not bite, neither do I have the strength to enter into a war with anyone :)

The nice post and upvote me group has been annoying me ever since I joined, the funniest I saw was on @ajremy blog, when he blogged about going for a surgery in some hours and someone commented interesting post Lols...😂😂
I searched for the interesting thing on the post but I saw none.

Some Steemians fail to understand that is not a must to comment on every post, don't just stalk any whale, dolphin or anyone with high sp, stalk the ones who create topics on blog about your field of study or what you have a clue about.

Ignoring is also a characteristic of maturity

Maybe the person is a fan of surgeries and finds it interesting. I always engage people on topics I find interesting. Most spammy comments is mostly newbies. I bet they'd learn with time. Gracias.

Yea...
They would. :-)

Ignoring is also a characteristic of maturity

I just fell in love with this last line. I am naturally someone who doesn't like to comment. I'll say steemit is the first social media that got my writing side out. I read and read posts but I see it brain tackling to write a valuable comment. So I just ignore and move on with the new things I've learnt from the post. I hope not to fall under the "nice post" crew someday. Lol.

@greenrun

the fear of being flagged is the beginning of wisdom on steemit.

I can only criticise posts of individuals I am close to or I know their way of thinking a bit. I can't just go onto a post of a total stranger and start dishing out my opinions. Who knows if he's putting the "good whale" tag up and the next thing you'll see is your rep at 0 for just voicing your opinion.

I think I'll keep opinions to myself and still do more ass licking or ignore till there is a downvote committee overlooking all downvotes. Thank you.

@learnandteach01

I hope not to fall under the "nice post" crew someday. Lol.

You wont
As long as you ignore.. 😂

It is a good news / bad news thing, I think. The reputation score tends to make people hold their tongue, which keeps the conversation civil but disagreement is "dangerous."
I tried to talk to a vegan about my dietary choices, he called me immoral. I did not bother to fight, I just muted him and moved on. On any other platform, I probably would have shredded him a new asshole... but he was not worth risking my rep over...

Thanks for joining us here. Yeah, the reputation is a factor too. Thanks for reminding me. I think that is what keeps the conversation the way it is. But what I don't understand is people who don't seem to respect or at least understand that everyone can't be the same.

Hello @greenrun

Interesting post, I have followed you please follow me back

This line has been frustrating Steeemians since March 2016.

It is line that carries a whole baggage of meanings.

It is a testament to the fact that Steemit needs to be Marketed the right way. And that the present marketing model of blogging for Money needs to be changed.

It is a testament to the fact that more work needs to be done when it comes to orientating Newbies about what Steemit is all about.

It is also a testament to the fact that most people on Steemit knows little about Steemit. And it will be helpful if Steem Inc opens an official Tutorial account.

I run the risk of writing a longer comment if I choose to delve into this deeper.

But the conclusion of the matter is that more time needs to be spent guiding Minnows Instead of Flagging them.

Yeah, I'd prefer engagement over flag any day. But that is just me. Others are welcome to treat as they deemed fit.

You are correct, echo chambers is a great description.
In life I think we ONLY tend to associate with like-mined / similar people.
"others" are 'different'. It starts in school with 'cliches' and stays through life, "accounting dept" vs "sales team" etc etc

perhaps like you (?) I enjoy a 'meeting of minds'.
Unless I can hear and consider your perspective, them I am just a "know all" with my head stuck in the sand!

What annoys me on steem?

  • a single picture posts (no info just a pic)
  • or a youtube link & no value-add
.... and people vote for them !!

I'd like (and I don't get my way often) to think Steem becomes a store of 'worthwhile' content. not a suppository of 'stuff' that lives in a bottomless pit of nothingness.

"we' get to decide that, by the way we vote. (and bots cannot do it!)

Besides, youtube has better search engine than STEEMIT does.

I think the community of like minds may be the reason why that is happening. Like you correctly pointed out the cliques formed in different areas of life still plays a role here. Thank you.

Wow, that is an interesting take on the matter. Being 3 days in, I can see your point here @greenrun. When people are rewarded for playing nice in the sandbox, more people are going to work hard to be nice. That makes sense for the most part. This is a fascinating take on psychology, know what I mean? It's like Pavlov's dog and positive or negative reinforcement. I have been wondering if I started posting items on Palestinian rights (I am of Palestinian descent), how that would end up being received. I guess there is only one way to find out.

I wonder how people would receive it. But search for similar articles and view the feedback and take a cue from it to know whether to proceed or not.

I have asked my self if those lines were programmed or just like this bot votes if people keeps bot that reply for them. It might be true though. considering some factors, it is clear that some people does not like stressing themselves reading but want to spam.

The annoying part is that tgey are the first to leave a commented, I don't know how they do it but it's alarming. Spamming must stop!

Thank you for sharing this awesome piece @greenrun.

They are usually the first because they DIDN'T read the article. Others are still busy reading when they jump to comment section to drop their generic replies. It's funny but true.

Yeah you are right... it just occured to me.

Crazy events

People may only contribute to the article they agree on. That is fair enough and logical.

100% correct

If I post something you don't like and u just come and start attacking me I'm bound to be offended.
That depends on the manner of approach anyway.

Someone said that if you want to see people on their best behavior then you should come to Steemit. This is due to the fact that there is incentivize for being good.

That is cool. But do you view a different opinion as an attack? Some may have a different opinion to you and deems it fit to express it. After all, steemit is the answer to other social media's censorship.

Thanks for joining the conversation.
