Savant Syndrome

A Hypothesis
...........................................................................................................................................................

  • a person who displays brilliance in a specific area, especially one involving memory.

The skills at which savants excel are generally related to memory. This may include rapid calculation, artistic ability, map making, or musical ability. Usually just one special skill is present

Doesn't that almost perfectly describe what we are now calling Artificial Intelligence? Would it not be more accurate to call called the phenomena Artificial Savantry. (if that wasn't a word it is now)

Artificial Intelligences are NOT people. They are computer programs that emulate skills, perceptions, or abilities that are beyond that of (normal) human capability. But they are not self-aware.

Does NOT describe an artificial Savant.

Totally agree.
The speed of the push from the powers that be, to accept AI as autonomous, with rights - is very very worrying.

It's almost like they saying lets accept non reality as reality.

They wouldn't do that to just to manipulate us would they? Surely not.

Shirley Not
I suggest that it's just stupid journalists.

Stupid journalist don't think, they just write what they are told to, from above..

There's a lot of truth in that.
I follow quite a few tech sites on Feedly.
I've noticed that many of the commercial ones have almost the exact same articles.
the wording isn't changed much...if at all.

That's called 'article spinning' which is done mostly by.........bots.
One article is written and is repeatedly spun to produce multiple different articles as original content on multiple sites. You are reading the same article over and over.

I've been employed as a "chief scientist" developing an AI product (many many years ago). It does seem suspicious that politicians are even discussing giving rights to AI devices. What game are they playing? Who wins? Who loses?

how many AI's have you come up with?
could any of them wiggle their ears or roll their tongue?
I can.

We are "wet computers". Eventually, computers will be self aware and sentient in ways comparable to us. Self driving cars can be viewed as examples of such awareness.

I've mused about putting together such a program myself for decades, but have never gotten around to it.

self driving cars are NOT self aware.
spatial awareness is not the same thing.

Agreed. I think that I know how to write software for devices that are sentient. Never had any time to play with the idea and probably never will. But I know that it can be done; someone is going to do it.

The problem with the term "artificial intelligence" is that it presupposes that there is something called "intelligence" in nature. There isn't. It's all software.

I think that I know how to write software for devices that are sentient
good luck with that.
they've been trying for fifty years or longer that I know of.
so far it hasn't happened.
won't either...for a long time.
the hardware is not up to the task.
sentience is a standing wave based on the resonance of a gazillion ^ 100 electrical interactions among the gazillion^10 interconnections of the gazillion neurons in the brain.
each neuron is likely as powerful as the internet.

I don't expect to see sentience any time soon.

In graduate school I studied under a brilliant man who taught me the power of keeping things simple.

The first sentient AI devices will be very simple and will give philosophers something to argue about. The first successful one will be a problem that they cannot solve; they will not be able to articulate what makes it distinct from human sentience.

It is possible that you and I will live to see that.

I'd like to see that.
but I sincerely doubt it.
right now, so I've heard, the best we can do is the mentality of a cockroach...without the mobility.

my $.02, They want to give these things rights so that corporations can blame the "AI" for whatever they want to blame it for, sure would be handy to blame something that does not exist if they decide to hack your car and kill you.

That might be it. Legal finger pointing.
