Airship
.......................................................................................................................................................................

Back in the day the AirShip ruled the skies. They were the most comfortable and safest form of long distance transportation. They could be compared to cruise ships in the air.

They were BIG.

They traveled MILLIONS of miles (each) with no incident, conveying their passengers all over the world in luxury.
Then they had a bad day.

and the press made the most of it.
Oddly enough very few people died when the Hindenberg burned...no where near as many as when the Titanic sunk.

Oddly enough after the Titanic hit an iceberg and HUNDREDS of people died there was no cry to 'ban ships'
Oddly enough when when the Hindenberg burned and about forty people died...they did.
The press..what can you say..bless their little evil hearts.
...........................

That was then...This is now. There's a new contender for the largest aircraft that has ever flown.

It has SO many advantages over other means of transportation except for one.
Speed.
It's slow.
That's not really a bad thing. It can stay in the air for DAYS...it can carry enough cargo to boggle the mind and it doesn't require airports to land.

Sort:

The press always supported by the interests of the big capitalists to promote a new business or to otherwise discredit what we are most interested in their plans.

The new aircraft is incredible, it looks more reinforced and big, I would like to take the challenge of Jules Verne and go around the world in 80 days in it :D
Greetings!!

Well, to be honest, blimps hold much fewer passengers than airlines and are much slower. So, maybe the press was a ploy by the emerging airline industry.

The DC-6 and others seated twice the number of people. The Hindenburg has twice as many crew as passengers.

Actually they don't need to hold less people.
I suspect that Lighter Than AirShip could be designed to hold many MORE people using todays technology. What was the Hindenberg made of? Steel, wood and canvas? What would the lift/payload ratio be with carbon fiber? With today's electronics and automation they wouldn't need as many crew (how many crew on a container ship or an oil tanker?) AirShips are being considered to be HEAVY LIFTERS to carry massive amounts of cargo...why not a lot of people in STYLE.

You're right about slow..but is that a bug or is it a feature? I don't recall that Cruise Ships are extremely fast. Consider AirShips to be cruise ships of the sky.

They've been making cruise ships faster and faster, but they also put a ton of entertainment and other things on the cruise ships. So, the airship would have to do something similar.

The average speed of a modern cruise ship is roughly 20 knots (23 miles per hour), with maximum speeds reaching about 30 knots (34.5 miles per hour).

slower than a kid on a bicycle.

Yes, but with 5,400-6,360 passengers enjoying buffets, casino, pools, and other entertainment, they are already AT the destination.

Exactly...it's not the destination it's the trip.
