Why do people feel that they need to belong to something 'greater than themselves'?

A club, a country or a God?
Are people afraid of taking responsibility for what they do? Can't they think for themselves? Is it 'daddy issues'?
There is no "I" in TEAM, they say. Why is that supposed to be a superior moral stance? Is that why the Team attacks the "I"? Loners are universally hated and despised in my experience and observation. To survive they must be good fighters, or pretty much hermits.
Why do Teams attack other Teams? Every language has words that mean "outsider". In context they all mean less than human.
I could rant for hours. The point being what's the problem with accepting individuals as they are? Why must we mold them to fit OUR standards....
...........or kill them if they don't?
When the country moved away from individualism (rights of the individual) that began the downfall of the country.
That would be correct.
The war on the free market produces this kind of result.

Low self esteem. Individualism separates the wheat from the chaff. In order to save himself or herself from embarrassment and humiliation, the low confidence individuals associate themselves with a group to feel more powerful.
Sometimes an anomaly shows up and his individualism is a threat to the collective as his/success is a reminder of their individual failures.
We are tribal as a species, but loners don't fit into that 'tribe', for whatever reason.
Therefor shunned.
'Difference' is a threat.
It's not nice, but that's the way it is..
IQ isn't nice, but that's the way it is.
Meritocracy isn't nice but that's the way it it..
.....and so on. It will not change. Unless the tribe mentality changes.
The tribe mentality has served the genes well, and they care not of moral questions.
'Why' is of no interest to them, only 'works' or 'not works'.
Only if the commies drug us enough to change us from being fully human, will it change. (imo)
We are tribal by nature. Yet there are a lot of things about our nature that we LEARN to deal with. We can learn to do with this as well. Yet people learning this is against the best interest of those in power, they remain in power if they keep us divided. They dumb down our education to make it easier to accomplish that.

I always thought that the comics section of the news papers always had the most factual and entertaining stories too.
Dick Tracy for example. Almost completely true, even if it was a bit ahead of it's time.

It's not 'learned' .
Children don't 'learn' to pick on the 'different' kids in the playground - ostracizing seems to happen without other stimulus...
If this behavior emerges at that age...then maybe it's something deeper than learning or unlearning.
Evolutionary speaking, this kind of makes sense.

from what you say it can be inferred that human isn't nice.
the human can be nice - can mostly be nice, I would say- but a feeling of threat (by difference) brings out the nasty side... makes the tribe instinct come into play...The collective has a group madness that the individual doesn't.
..A person thinks, people don't....
My experience leads me to think you are correct.
