In order to provide free content, Salon primarily depended on advertisements to run its servers, the company explained in a blog post published on Monday. However, digital ads are insufficient to fully pay for most media outlets – the site noted that ad revenue fell $40 billion from 1999 to 2010 – and Salon, in particular, has decided to offer users a new option to pay for content.

While they don't come out and say it directly, the site, according to The Verge, is using the open-source CoinHive software in order to mine the cryptocurrency monero.

Back in the day ads were too bad. In the last few years that's changed. Now I'm forced to use an AdBlocker...if I don't it's impossible to enjoy most sites. The ads ALREADY use my computers power without even asking if I want it to. That's why the computer runs sooooo slow when I log on. That's why the screen is so jumpy...(not to mention possible malware)

yup...I like this idea.

Except that I don't visit salon.

Interesting. I have read that most of those JS miners are being targeted by ad blockers and antivirus softwares. Salon did well by asking first rather than running it in the background without user consent. This could also be used by charity websites or to raise fund for a charity.

I predict it will be used a LOT.
Asking is the honorable thing to do..unlike what they are doing now. Like I said..the ads bog down your computer in the same way. I wouldn't mind giving them permission to use a little bit of my CPU power to help pay the rent...as long as I don't have to endure those NASTY Ads (are there any other kind?)

I’m working for an local video streaming company and we have many active users watching full length movies. I’ve raised awareness around this idea just to plant the seed. There will be things to solve, mentality to adjust and time to fly by before anything will be even considered, if at all.
