Short and simple the "thing" of Steemit is the way money interacts. Giving freedom to use it at the community's will, so that it can for example help developing countries. It has also become a bit of a hub for crypto talk. For me personally it's also the mindset of a lot of people, and the way it helps (helped me) to get introduced to the blockchain world.
