Secret Tunnel Discovered Beneath the Temple of the Moon
The Temple of the Moon is an Incan ceremonial temple on Huayna Picchu near Machu Picchu, in Peru, lying 390 meters below the summiton the north side. It dates back 1500 years, and was rediscovered in 1936.
The Temple of the Moon is made up of stone masonry and an open-face cave, in the center of which is a throne carved out of rock. Beside the throne are steps leading deeper into the cave. It is believed that the caves were used to hold mummies.
Recently, Mexican archaeologists discovered a secret tunnel near the pyramid of the temple using an electrical tomography scan. It has been suggested that the tunnel may have been used by the people to emulate the underworld. The tunnel is about 10 meters below the ground. This is not the only tunnel that has been discovered; other temples also have similar underground tunnels.
Researchers said that they will soon start their search to explore the tunnel to know when it was built. This study will also reveal if there are more tunnels around the pyramid.
