Apparition of Etrog's Moses in the Coulees

I had a little fun in Photoshop with a couple of images from 2006: a photo of Sorel Etrog's sculpture of Moses at my Alma Mater, and a curious UFO looking cloud formation in the coulees across from the University of Lethbridge.

the reason you cannot see the UofL clearly in this photo (across the river) is that the architect Arthur Erikson designed it so it would blend in with the coulees.

Here is a panorama photo of the UofL as seen from the bus loop (2016). Initially, the sculpture stood outdoors, but the strong west winds caused havoc with its base and it started leaning. After having been in storage for some time, the base was restored and the sculpture installed inside, lording over the stairwell.

History of the statue of Moses:

Statue went from Expo 67 to the University of Lethbridge

Sometimes, it’s just a matter of asking the question. When Van E. Christou and his family attended Expo 67 in Montreal, they had no idea they’d be coming home with a five-metre-tall, 1,800-kilogram souvenir for the University of Lethbridge.

“When we were walking around Expo, I was really struck by the art throughout the site, and I noticed that each sculpture was owned by the House of Seagram,” says Dr. Christou, at the time an inaugural board member of the university, which opened that year. “I called up our president, Sam Smith, and asked if he could get me a meeting with one of their representatives. The next day I spent an afternoon with Charles Bronfman, the CEO. At the end of our talk, I asked him what they were doing with all the sculptures when Expo was finished and he said they had no plans.”

Where the Statue once stood outdoors, new campus extensions were built: a Fine Art Building and a Library - the Fine Arts had previously shared space in the Phys-ed Fieldhouse, and the Library cramped quarters in the main building.

great post! upvoted and rebloged

thank you - glad you liked it. My Alma Mater 1977 to 1982 - I lived in Lethbridge until 2011, and had been there watching the University being built on the West Side (1971): http://www.uleth.ca/facilities/planning/content/university-hall-1971 - and later, while working for the Art Department as a Studio Technician, I helped move to the new Fine Art Building in 1981.
