The KETOGENIC DIET Explained: The benefits of becoming keto-adapted

in #diet9 years ago (edited)

Did you know your body can run on two different types of fuel? Glucose OR Ketones (but not both at the same time ... whaaaaaaat?)

Don't worry, I didn't either, that's why in today's video I summarize what I have learned so far about the ketogenic diet, why I am going to give it a shot, and what that means (what do I have to do/eat?).

For those who are not able to watch the video I have included the text (the "first principles") that I derived from the video with some additional notes below which should give all the pertinent information you need to begin thinking about the ketogenic diet and becoming keto-adapted. For those interested in listening to the audio-only I have included that below the video.

Audio only:

The Ketogenic Diet

What? A diet that contains a macronutrient ratio that mimics fasting: high fat, moderate protein, low carb

Ketosis: When fat becomes the body's preferred fuel (as opposed to sugar/glucose)

  • How? Traditionally 5-7 days of fasting (NO THANKS)
  • Now: ketone supplementation plus a ketogenic diet

Why? Re-frame: There are two diets; 1. The Glucose Adapted Diet (GAD) and 2. The Keto-adapted Diet (KAD)

  • You are already on the GAD, the question is, "Should you be?"

The Glucose Adapted Diet

  • leads to insulin-spikes, fat storage, cancer growth, free radical generation, and potentially gluconeogenesis (breaking down muscle to create glucose)

The Ketone Adapted Diet

  • stabilizes insulin levels, burns fat for energy, cancer starving, generates fewer free radicals, not gluconeogenic, anti-inflammatory

Medical

  • treatment of diabetes, epilepsy, cancer, ALS, alzheimer's, dementia, migraines, bipolar disorder
  • long-term studies show minimal risk of long-term harm and likely long-term benefits
  • obesity/diabetes study: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17447017
  • given the number of medical applications, maybe it's not "medicine" it's just a healthier fuel for our bodies

Why for me?

  • ENERGY, brain function, overall health
  • help deal with a history of chronic fatigue and brain fog
  • help guide my dietary behavior, push me to consume fewer carbs and more vegetables
  • allow me to take advantage of the well-known benefits of fasting and intermittent-fasting, without the need to fast

SUPPLEMENTS

Exogenous Ketones

#1: KetoOS

  • BHB (exogenous ketones)
  • powdered medium chain triglycerides (MCTs)-->ketone fuel
  • salts to combat diuretic effect of exogenous ketones (biggest risk associated with the diet)
  • KetoOS seems like an all around solution for pushing your body into a ketotic state (fasting state) without actually fasting. Consumption of KetoOS (or KetoCaNa) in conjunction with a ketogenic diet enables your body to become keto-adapted (physiologically structured to burn fat and ketones for energy) as opposed to glucose adapted (what you are now, physiologically structured to use glucose as your fuel source).
  • appears to be ALL you need to SAFELY enter ketosis without fasting and remain healthy, though supplementing with multi-vitamins is advised just to be sure your body is getting all the nutrients it needs

#2: KetoCaNa

  • Like KetoOS but without the MCTs which can cause gastrointestinal distress for some people

Medium Chain Triglycerides

#1: C8 (Caprylic Acid)

  • fastest conversion to ketones, i.e. fastest increase concentration of ketones in blood-->push body into ketosis faster
  • fastest to metabolize in the brain, so ideal for improving cognitive function
  • minimal gut irritation

#2: C10 (Capric Acid)

  • slower conversion to ketones than C8
  • not as good brain fuel (less noticeable cognitive effects)
  • cheaper than C8

Ketone Concentration Testing Methods (for determining if you are in a ketotic state)

#1: Smackfat Ketone Strips: $11

  • urine testing
  • cheap
  • loses accuracy once keto-adapted

#2: Precision Xtra: $107

  • blood testing
  • maintains accuracy

Additional Resources

Sort:

Currently on Ketosis trying to become fully keto adapted.

212 --> 200 lbs weight in 4 weeks and 2 days so far while str up
before bench 245 x 5 (5sets) ---> after 265 x 5 (5sets) as of yesterday

to anyone thinking about keto, definitely do it but also be aware of the initial keto flu and just power through it.

Thanks for the info! Any good resources you would recommend? I can add them to the post. FYI, supplementing with exogenous ketones like KetoOS and KetoCaNa should mitigate "keto flu" if you are fasting, but they also eliminate the need to fast, which causes keto-flu

Sure, I've been watching a lot of videos from the user that talks and walks Ketosis. She goes on to also differentiate the differences between being in Ketosis and being Keto-Adapted.

Since I just recently started I don't have much but another that I seek info and motivation from is https://www.reddit.com/r/keto/ Perhaps we can get an active sub steemit forum for ketosis?

Lastly, pretty much just google and youtube stuff for Ketosis Recipes. Main thing I learned is that you can use Cauliflower as a replacement to rice or bread. You can make low carb sushi and low carb pizzas using cauliflower. I think that's my best resource is to learn how to cook up good stuff especially using caulflower then it will almost feel like you are eating the same stuff you used to eat.

Hope that helps and happy to support you and what you are doing. Thanks for the tip, I will mention that if/when I meet new people who are about to go on Ketosis so that they can mitigate the keto flu.

Thanks.

This is interesting. I really didn't know anything about this even though I'm into health and wellness. Thanks for posting!

I know right? I was Pre-Med and I never heard of this! Our bodies can change to use ketones instead of glucose?! How is that not worth discussing? I think we will come to view the dominance of the glucose-adapted diet as a kind of religion, something we just believe because it's what we know.

I tried to discuss this diet and the Keto OS supplement with a primary care doctor. He didn't know anything about it either. I think you'll start hearing more and more about it. There are about100 clinical trials right now going on involving the ketogenic diet

i am not sure if you really know what you are talking about !
For the average person there is no reason to simply start a pure ketogenic diet !
in my opinion your post is full of dangerous half-knowledge and to much supplement recommendations.
This could create misunderstanding and lead people to follow some kind of nutrition wich doesnt corresponds to their individual requirements

Ketogenic diet is great. Feels like unlocking a secret body composition through diet.

I didn't use MCT or ketone supplements and went through the traditional diet, quitting carbs cold turky.
I found the keto flue is much better to cope with if a lot of sport is done in parallel. Its hard but I got into ketosis way faster.

Also Pros:

  • Increased mitochondria count in brain cells.
  • healthier and longer living red blood cells.
  • Only 70% of normal oxigen is needed because ketones are processed more efficient.
  • Always a clear mind.
  • Endurance training leads to production of more ketones, so after 10-20 min biking you feel like you have more energey.
  • Decreased muscle loss if training is skipped.
  • Decreased muscle sourness (but you still get sour muscles).

Con:

  • Hangover is twice as bad. (keep to liquor and drink lots of Water.)
  • building muscles mass and strength is harder. Not impossible, but a little harder. Carbs are like a nitro boost. But if you have the time its better to go slow and safe anyways.

BTW: Your body still has cells that need glucose.(red blood cells, parts of the kidney and some cells in the eye) But the body is producing enough glucose through gluconeogenesis from fat stores to supply them. Every other cell is happily jumping on the ketones (more accuratly the beta hydroxibuterat).

Amazing video and content. Thank you for putting this together. It's really interesting. I'm really thankful to know my body (seems) to work okay with the "eat what you want" diet (for now). Hopefully if I'm creating free radicals, technology will save me from cancer in the future. We do a lot of high fat food because @corinnestokes has been doing research on the benefits of good fats.

Looking forward to see if this will work out for you.

I had heard before about Bulletproof coffee and high fat diet but didn't know about Ketosis and the Ketogenic diet. Your post just triggered me into digging deeper on what Jan Irvin at Gnostic Media exactly means what he is talking about these things such as wheat as a potential killer.

So I've just listened for the first time at the following exchange of interviews.

It's kind of funny coming across your post! I just researched the ketogenic diet two days ago. My sister did her own diet and lost a lot of weight. But she went to doctor because she kept losing weight without even trying. He told her she was in ketosis and unless she started eating 2500 calories she would end up in the hospital. This made ne research ketosis and ketogenic diet and I want to give it a try. I want to move away from too much carbs and sugary foods and eat healthier. Great video thanks for sharing!

Great post! Full Steem Ahead!!!

Seems expensive... maybe I'm just poor lol

You can just cut out all carbs and wait 3 to 5 days.
Do lots of sport in between and you will be in ketosis soon.
Keto adaptation takes then a few months to get the optimal benefit, but you will feel the difference already after switching to ketosis.
