I was in Dhaka for the 1988 flood and many other smaller floods. It was a terrible time. Our house was in a reasonably elevated part of Banani, we had walls around the house, and put down sandbags, but the waters kept rising and rising and eventually our house was flooded. The situation in other parts of the city, like Baridhara and Dhanmondi was much worse. My friend's father rented a row boat, for the duration of the flood and we were able to leave the house and explore. As a child, it is exciting, but the excitement was always tempered by the suffering that was all around.
