Napoleon III. suchte ein billiges, haltbares Butterersatzprodukt um damit die schnell wachsende Bevölkerung und die Soldaten an der Front zu ernähren.
Der aus dem Süden Frankreichs stammende Franzose Hippolyte Mège-Mouriès experimentierte mit Rinderfett und Magermilch. Aus den weichen und öligen Bestandteilen, entwickelte er ein streichfähiges Produkt.
Wie kam es zu der Namensnennung Margarine?
In Anlehnung an das griechische Wort für Perle „margaron“ vergab er den Namen Margarine.
1869 wurde dieses Produkt als Oleo Margarine zum Patent angemeldet.
