More and more devices in German living rooms communicate around the clock with the Internet and are always on call - keyword: Always-on. But what does that mean for energy consumption? E.ON has measured and calculated how much the devices permanently connected to the network actually consume. The result is surprising: Amazon's Alexa Echo Plus loudspeakers and Google Home consume less than 60 cents of electricity per month on standby - even though they always listen. Concealed power guzzlers, however, are game consoles and notebooks in idle or standby mode: Anyone who never completely switches off the devices and has them permanently connected to the network must expect additional costs of up to seven euros a month, depending on the model.
Smart Speakers and Low Power Streaming Adapters
Google Home (2.2 watts) and Amazon Echo Plus (2.6 watts) consume very little power in 'Listening Mode' speakers. One exception is third-party boxes: the Alexa-capable Sonos One loudspeaker (4.5 watts) tested by E.ON consumed about twice as much power - but for continuous operation this is just 95 cents a month. Even those who have their streaming adapter plugged in continuously, can breathe easy: The top dogs Google Chromecast, Apple TV and Amazon Fire TV consume less than two watts and are thus less than 50 cents per month in electricity consumption in standby mode.
Use standby mode of consoles and notebooks wisely
Ready-, instant-on, or standby mode: The constant call readiness has many names - and a price. Because just notebooks and game consoles in the background also gladly once updates, if they are not completely switched off. Whoever only closes the laptop and puts it plugged in at the mains consumes - depending on the model and energy setting - an average of up to seven euros per month. The situation is similar with the game consoles. Both the Playstation 4 (8-9 watts) and the Xbox One (15 watts) consume power in sleep mode. Anyone who runs the devices continuously pays around two to three euros per month. An exception is the Nintendo Switch: it consumes less than 0.5 watts in standby.
The calculations were made on an average electricity price of 29 ct / kWh (as of early 2018).

Immer mehr Geräte in deutschen Wohnzimmern kommunizieren rund um die Uhr mit dem Internet und sind ständig abrufbereit - Stichwort: Always-on. Doch was bedeutet das für den Energieverbrauch? E.ON hat nachgemessen und berechnet, wie viel die ständig am Netz hängenden Geräte tatsächlich verbrauchen. Das Ergebnis überrascht: Amazons Alexa-Lautsprecher Echo Plus sowie Google Home verbrauchen im Standby weniger als 60 Cent Strom pro Monat - und das obwohl sie immer zuhören. Verkappte Stromfresser sind hingegen Spielekonsolen und Notebooks im Ruhe- beziehungsweise Standby-Modus: Wer die Geräte nie ganz ausschaltet und dauerhaft am Netz hat, muss - je nach Modell - mit monatlich bis zu sieben Euro Mehrkosten rechnen.
Smarte Lautsprecher und Streaming-Adapter mit geringem Stromverbrauch
Unter den Lautsprechern mit Sprachassistenten verbrauchen Google Home (2,2 Watt)und Amazon Echo Plus (2,6 Watt) im "Zuhören-Modus" nur wenig Strom. Eine Ausnahme stellen dabei Boxen von Drittanbietern dar: Der von E.ON getestete Alexa-fähige Sonos One Lautsprecher (4,5 Watt) verbrauchte rund doppelt so viel Strom - für den Dauerbetrieb sind aber auch das gerade einmal 95 Cent im Monat. Auch wer seinen Streaming-Adapter durchgehend eingesteckt hat, kann aufatmen: Die Platzhirsche Google Chromecast, Apple TV und Amazon Fire TV verbrauchen allesamt weniger als zwei Watt und liegen somit unter 50 Cent Stromkosten pro Monat bei durchgängigem Standby-Betrieb.
Standby-Modus von Konsolen und Notebooks mit Bedacht nutzen
Ready-, Instant-on-, oder Standby-Modus: Die ständige Abrufbereitschaft hat viele Namen - und einen Preis. Denn gerade Notebooks und Spielekonsolen führen im Hintergrund auch gerne einmal Updates durch, wenn sie nicht ganz ausgeschaltet sind. Wer den Laptop nur zuklappt und am Netz eingesteckt lässt, verbraucht - je nach Modell und Energieeinstellung - pro Monat im Schnitt bis zu sieben Euro Strom zusätzlich. Ähnlich verhält es sich bei den Spielekonsolen. Sowohl die Playstation 4 (8-9 Watt) als auch die Xbox One (15 Watt) verbrauchen im Ruhemodus Strom. Wer die Geräte ununterbrochen laufen lässt, zahlt im Monat rund zwei bis drei Euro zusätzlich. Eine Ausnahme stellt die Nintendo Switch dar: diese verbraucht im Standby weniger als 0,5 Watt.
Die Berechnungen sind auf einem durchschnittlichen Strompreis von 29 ct/kWh erfolgt (Stand Anfang 2018).
