He was born 119 years ago: Manuel dos Reis Machado - later he became the father of capoeira, a mixture of dance and martial arts.
From birth, the Brazilian was known by the nickname Bimba. Born near Salvador da Bahia, he became an early supporter of the artistic capoeira art. At the age of 12, he is said to have taken Capoeira lessons, from 1917 he then taught himself in this artistic sport.
However: The practice of Capoeira was then officially banned in the military dictatorship of Brazil. And also severely punished: Up to 300 lashes threatened, who was caught at Capoeira.
