Lehm wurde und wird immer noch als Arme-Leute-Baustoff angesehen. In der europäischen Bautradition wurde der Baustoff Lehm oft versteckt verwendet. Lehmputze wurden oft mit Kalkfarbe gestrichen. Struktur und Farbigkeit der erdenden Putze wurden dabei ignoriert.

Clay has always been a „poor people stuff“. In european building traditions mostly hidden behind Bricks ans stucko. Clay plastered walls got a lime wash. Structure and color of earthen plaster got ignored.

Ganz anders in anderen Weltkulturen. Afrikas Frauen verwenden vielfältige Formen und Farben zur Gestaltung der Lehmoberflächen. Die hohe Kunst japanischer Lehmputzmeister zeigt sich auch in der Vielfalt der Spezialwerkzeuge die sie verwenden um Lehmoberflächen kunstvoll zu bearbeiten. Adobe, selbstgeformte Ziegel aus Lehm, Sand und Stroh, sind ein weitverbreiteter Baustoff im südlichen amerikanischen Kontinent.

Totaly different to other cultures. African woman are quite skilled using various forms, shapes and colors making Clay designs. The high art of japanese clay artistry is world famous and the variety of there tools set the mark on ClayArt. Adobe, selfmade Bricks by Clay, Sand and fibres are still a well used material in the Building traditions of South America all the way up to Arizona and New Mexico.

Mit der aufkommenden Ökologiebewegung der achtziger Jahre erlebte der Lehmbau in Europa eine Renaissance. Nicht nur weil ökologisch, sondern auch aus ästhetischen und der gar sinnlichen Qualitäten des Lehms.

With the Eco movement in Europe, Clay gets a second chance. Not only because of its ecological factors, but also for aesthetic or even more sensible qualities.

Da bisher von den konventionellen Berufsausbildungsstellen völlig ignoriert, hat sich im Lehmbau eine eigene Kultur des Lernens entfaltet. Man reist von Baustelle zu Baustelle um sich auszubilden, internationale Workcamps gibt es unzählige.

Because still ignored at the conventional apprenticeship system, the new movement developed its very own culture of learning. Just by traveling from one to next natural building site. People are well connected, which is exiting and amacing to see, and to be part of it! International workshops are countless all around the world.

Kenntnisse sind meistens nicht erforderlich, nur die Bereitschaft auch etwas schmutzig werden zu dürfen. Lehm lässt sich ohne Probleme abwaschen, und hat eine extrem wertvolle Nebenwirkung: Es erdet! Womöglich muss man es erst einmal selber ausprobieren, um zu wissen was einem gefehlt hat. In Worte kann ich es nicht fassen. Ich halte es für sehr wichtig und es ist das was ich allen wünsche.

Mostly, experience and knowledge are not necessary, only good will and openess for getting dirty. No problem anyway, clay is easy to wash off. Clay has a extrem high value for you: Its grounding! Perhaps you need to do it by yourself to understand what has been missed. I can not put it into words. It is essential for us, and it is something I wish for everyone.
