Dieses in konservativen amerikanischen Kreisen äußerst beliebte Zitat wird seit kaum 10 Jahren irrtümlich Voltaire zugeschrieben, aber der Spruch stammt nicht von dem französischen Philosophen aus dem 18. Jahrhundert, sondern aus dem Text eines vorbestraften rechtsextremen amerikanischen Holocaust-Leugners aus dem Jahr 1993:
"To determine the true rulers of any society, all you must do is ask yourself this question: who is it that I am not permitted to criticise? We all know who it is that we are not permitted to criticise. We all know who it is that it is a sin to criticise. Sodomy is no longer a sin in America.
