Can the US go twice into the same river?

in #destasteem6 years ago (edited)

Early last year, Donald Trump fulfilled his election promise and signed a decree on US withdrawals from Trans-Pacific Partnership (TTP). Recently, the US president said he is ready to reconsider if his country is offered better conditions. But is such a scenario possible?

With the signing of an agreement on the creation of TTP in the world, a large free trade area could emerge - its participants accounted for 40% of the world's GDP. However, the new American president's policy, which can be called "economic nationalism", strikes out these expectations, says The Conversation.
The largest countries in the Asia-Pacific region (with the exception of China) began talking about the need for large trade agreements back in 2008. Official negotiations on the formation of TTP began two years later - the main "instigators" of the process were the United States, Australia, Chile, and Vietnam.

Long and difficult negotiations - to reach consensus, it takes not less than 6 years. During this time, several countries joined the process, including Japan, Canada and Mexico, and by the time the agreement was signed, the number of TTP countries had increased to 12.

The main purpose of the agreement is to strengthen the economic relationships among its participants; for example, the parties agree to cancel the customs duties on many items. However, in general, the agreement turned out to be rather complicated - many countries asked for time to adapt to various conditions.

At the same time, TTP has found a lot of criticism. They argue that free imported goods threaten local producers, and such agreements themselves contradict the idea of democracy, because their conditions are discussed behind closed doors. At the same time there is no unity in the ranks of opponents of the deal. Some of the points (for example, in the protection of intellectual property and the environment) are called too radical, and someone, on the other hand, is too soft.

The US withdrew from the so-called many preliminary agreements of the end of the TTP. However, the remaining 11 nations did not lose their heads and quietly resumed their work, signing an additional agreement a month ago.

Of course, if the United States now wants to return, it is unlikely that other TTP participants will oppose it. The only question is whether they will want to plunge again into the swamp of the negotiation process, which will surely take several years.
So it's likely that US initiatives will remain in voiced places - on Twitter by Donald Trump.
