Here's something new!

I have a habit of web-surfing (duh, who doesn't) and much of my surfing revolves around the discovery of super tiny films that capture BIG topics. These films are typically 2-5 minutes apiece. They're quick, fun, interesting... and focused on art, architecture and design. Instead of sending these links off into the infinite ether of email or slapping them blindly to a facebook wall... I thought I might try a little experiment right here on Steemit.

So, here's my first episode of Design Shorts - a weekly series of three short films and a single design idea.

Ep.01 : "Architectural Adaptation"

"Village in the City" - Guangzhou, China. One of the fastest growing cities in the world. This film captures the anxieties of an encroaching metropolis on a traditional way of life. The film poses a looming question - what will happen to this agricultural village in the city?

"The Lone Man Building a Cathedral By Hand" - Just outside of Madrid, Spain. Justo Gallego has been building a Cathedral for 53 years. Today, he is 90 years old and continues to pursue his monumentous life-project. Gallego has no formal architectural or construction training, but he does have an incredible passion and a vision.

Allan Hill - Detroit, Michigan. The Packard Plant was once the largest automotive manufacturing facility in the world. Today, it's the largest abandoned building in the country. Allan Hill is a caretaker of the site. He's the lone resident of a factory building of 3,500,000-square-foot (325,000 sq-meters). Here's a clip of Allan and the place he calls home.

Each of these films highlight an older generation's pursuit to find their place in a new, sometimes alien context. It's interesting to see the contrast between a burgeoning metropolis (Guangzhou) alongside a fallen one (Detroit.) In the case of the Cathedral, this DIY maestro is creating his own rules and defying traditional preconceptions.

I am always pleased to watch about the life of average people showing the reality in which we live. For me such tiny videos are murch more valuable than the long hollywood movies. Thank you voronoi!
