This is pretty amazing.

Especially as at this stage it is an early proof of concept.

Make sure you check out the video, the description and the thumbnail does NOT do it justice:

We reconstruct 3D photos from casually captured cell phone or DSLR images: a panoramic, textured, normal mapped, multi-layered geometric mesh representation, that can be viewed with full binocular and motion parallax in VR, as well as with a regular mobile device or web browser.

So basically, you can capture a three dimensional scene, in a manner as easy as taking a panoramic photograph, and then navigate, add lighting or special effects, to the rendered scene.

Isn't technology amazing!?

What do you think this could be used for?

There are obvious things like tourism and real estate ...

I was thinking maybe capturing crime scenes?

Thanks for drawing my attention to this. That is quite convincing. As I hear it, their capture technique is an off-the-shelf, so their contribution is mainly in the way they generate mesh, normals and stiches the occluded parts. I have done a fair deal of image processing myself and even though they mostly use existing techniques, if these examples are to be trusted they have an extremely well functioning application here.

It's cool that someone finally did this. I assume they'll likely be able to deal with some of their challenges like transparent objects and people in the future. If not them, then someone else.

VR will likely become more ubiquitous in the future, and technology like this will be important for exploring more than just virtual worlds. Designers or engineers could view spaces without having to go there. People could view houses, or apartments, or even just hotel rooms, before they travel, as if they were actually walking in them. Likely it's just a cool novelty at the moment, but I think moving forward, it will have its uses.

Technology is amazing?? That's an understatement. Technology is still an amazement

Wao that is mind-blowing and obviously 3d Photos technology should be use thanks for sharing this great post @makerhack

Do you think that is will allow people to then 3D print the things they capture?

Heh now that would be living in the future :D

Hi friend, I would like to know if you use bots and if you think its necesary

VERY BIUTIFULE

Wow truly amazing for innovative images like this would be great in market or shall we say us human....

Nice post...
